General Attitudes

Colombia is the second-most populous country in South America, after Brazil. Sixty-one cities have a population of 100,000 or more; four cities have a population of more than 1 million. Colombia’s cultural diversity is revealed by the indigenous, European (mainly Spanish), and African heritages of its inhabitants.

Diet

Most middle-class families eat elaborate meals that follows Spanish and indigenous traditions. The most important meal of the day is usually eaten during lunch time. Colombians enjoy many national and international cuisines. Specialty dishes are eaten during holidays. Colombians consume large quantities of beer and coffee.

Family Life

Colombian’s basic household unit consists of a father, a mother, and their children. Upper class families usually have many children. Like in many other cultures, the father is the head of the household, usually working outside the home while the mother is responsible for the basic education of the children and homemaking. In the past few decades, the number of working wives and mothers has increased.

Education

The first universities in the country were established by The Catholic Church before 1700. Today there are over 40 universities in the country, including public universities that receive funding from the government. In Colombia, higher education is considered necessary to achieve professional goals and to contribute to the progress and prosperity of the country.
