The “Argentinian Sun” Who “Totally Captivated Our Hearts”

An Experienced Host Family Expected Cultural Exchange for Their Two Sons…

When two working parents suffering from long work hours and New Jersey/Connecticut commutes signed up for their 4th Au Pair, they knew what to expect from Au Pair child care.  They expected their Au Pair to help with homework for their two school aged sons, to drive the boys to and from school and to bond with the family by playing board games.

…But Didn’t Expect That Instead, They’d Learn How to Enjoy Life to the Fullest.

Things changed faster than they could’ve imagined. Their “grumpy teenager” suddenly started to “choose to get out of his den.” Somehow, there were “family lunches more often,” and they were “cooking side by side, laughing.”

This Host Family knew their Au Pair was different.

Sofia entered their lives on a “gloomy day in early March” with her “warm, sunny, very pure personality.”  She taught the boys and Host Parents alike about “having fun, being grateful and enjoying life to the fullest.”

From Host Mom Ana:

“On a gloomy day in early March, a petite free-spirited Argentinian Sun entered into the life of our family and totally captivated our hearts from the very beginning.”

Coming from a rematch where we tried everything possible to make the relationship work and it still wasn’t working despite all the effort, we took the chance at another match. We should say – it was the love from First sight!

Sofia entered our lives and made them so much better. Being open, sincere and having a sparkly energetic personality she captivated both of our sons and established instant rapport with them. It was not an easy endeavor since one of the boys was a grumpy teenager who preferred to stay in his room all the time and it was practically impossible to get him to climb out of his shell to have an actual human interaction.

“A few weeks after Sofia’s arrival, I couldn’t believe my eyes when this very selective teenager was sitting in the kitchen and enthusiastically chatting with Sofia about teenage stuff: books music, school, his friends, etc.”

They had an authentic undeniable connection. “Wow, she is the Magician”, – I thought to myself that day. The youngest child, Stefan, got attached to Sofia very fast too. She is such a joy to be around. She started to impact our lives pretty fast. Both I and my husband have careers and often spend long hours in the office. Thus, having daily dinners with the family can be a difficult task. Upon her arrival, Sofia opened her big eyes and said simply: “But dinner is a family time. It is very important to spend time together. In Argentina, my family cooks, dances and chats every single day”. Lo and behold, we somehow started to have family lunches more often. The grumpy teenager would choose to get out of his den, the youngest son would be eager to share with Sofia about his day and all his various pursuits.

Fast forward a month later… “We always dance in Argentina, always” said Sofia to me. “Dancing while cooking?! Weird” – I thought to myself. But yet I decided to try.

“We had a blast in the kitchen preparing the meal for the family when we put on Alexa and were cooking side by side, laughing, telling Alexa to put our favorite pieces of music, cutting meats, and salads and helping each other out.”

We were laughing so hard, that kids came to the kitchen and joined the fun. Sofia is such a warm, sunny, optimistic, very pure personality – she makes our lives so much brighter and teaches us more about friendships, having fun and building authentic relationships, being grateful and enjoying life to the fullest.

She has an insatiable desire to live her life to the fullest and be her authentic self. She teaches our boys that. She teaches us that.”

She made my, host Mom’s, life much more interesting as well – be it discussing life, relationships, career aspirating, fashion trends, make-up, music, travel… Once we were discussing things you did as teenagers and I revealed that I always wanted to have 3 holes in my ear but my parents forbade it. “Ana, it is your life. You can do it now. Let’s go! You’re going to love it!” And we did do it together! She also helped me set up my Instagram page and educated me in contemporary music and fashion. I went to the first big music concert in the city with Sofia… I was hesitant at first, but age\experience was not a factor. We had so much fun!

Sofia has a family in Argentina, but now she also has a family in the USA.”

We love her dearly and are ecstatic that she decided to extend the au-pair program with us. We had exciting 2019 with Sofia and are so looking forward to 2020 with her.
