My favorite thing about being a LAR
My favorite part of my job is meeting all the nice new host families, building relationships with them, and establishing a small community with my au pairs. These girls (I have only worked with female au pairs thus far) come from all over the world and bring their culture with them. I love to travel, but since it is not possible for me right now, I feel like I am getting a taste of the world through the relationships I’ve built with these young ladies who come from countries like: China, Spain, North Africa, Brazil, and Russia. It’s also amazing to witness the bond that occurs between the children and the au pairs. It’s simply amazing.
Why I love my job
I have been working for GoAuPair as the San Antonio/New Braunfels area Local Area Representative (LAR) since Februsary of 215. I have worked with several different families, but our cluster has remained quite small due to host family moves (military, residency assignments, better job offers for the host parents, etc.). Although I’ve met and worked with over ten families, I have had a maximum of 4 families at one time in my cluster. I’d love to see my area grow as I’m learning through my job the many benefits of au pair child care. As a former educator, a parent of preschool-aged children, and someone who had her kids in day care at one time, I totally understand why a family would choose the au pair route to meet their child care needs. Parents want what is best for their children and of course, they want it to be cost effective. I have found au pair child care to be both.
As the LAR, I am the direct local contact for all the families in my area. I tour the homes to make sure they meet the requirements to house an au pair, conduct introductory interviews, greet the au pairs upon arrival, conduct orientations for families and au pairs, make monthly contacts to answer questions and check in on my host families and au pairs, make myself available for any type of mediation needed during an au pair’s time of service, plan fun actitivities for the au pairs throughout the year, and coordinate family activities for all the host families to meet one another among other duties
After teaching in the public school system for 9 years, I decided to stay home with my two young children. As a classroom teacher, I taught high school special education for three years and high school English for the other six. I have a BA in English, a MEd in Special Education, and a MA in counseling. While I enjoy every second at home with my kids, I feel blessed to have found this opportunity at GoAuPair to work with young people from all over the world and other families who, like me, just want what is best for thier families. When I am not entertaining my toddlers or performing job-related duties for GoAuPair, I can be found at the gym (I love yoga, pilates and lifting weights), listening to music, reading a book, or watching a documentary.
