Au Pair Hosting Guidelines

Schedules
One of the benefits of the Au Pair program is that families are able to set their own childcare schedules. Au Pairs provide child care and child care related light housekeeping.  This can include tasks such as:
  • General supervision
  • Children's laundry
  • Preparing children's meals
  • Helping with homework
  • General tidying up in children's areas
  • Driving children to school and activities

Au Pairs work up to 45 hours each week, no more than 10 hours each day and receive 1 and 1/2 days off each week.  Au Pairs do not need to have the same schedule each day and Host Families can change this regularly provided it stays within the 45 and 10 hour limits.

Stipend
The Au Pair's weekly stipend conforms with federal minimum wage law and adjustments and will be different for each Au Pair program. In the event federal minimum wage changes, the Au Pair's weekly stipend will also change. The stipend is paid directly to the Au Pair at an agreed upon time.
Vacation
Au Pairs are required to receive 2 weeks of paid vacation each year. Au Pairs are not required to take all of their vacation at once, it may be broken up into smaller increments throughout the year.  Vacation is taken at a mutually agreed upon time, which means that you and your Au Pair will both decide when her vacation will be taken.

Many Host Families choose to take their Au Pair on vacation with them.  Au Pairs are allowed to travel outside of the U.S. during their first year with proper documentation provided by goAUPAIR. International travel requirements for Au Pairs are different than the requirements for U.S. citizens so Au Pairs will need to contact the embassy of the country they are travelling to in order to receive proper visa and travel documentation.  If a Host Family takes their Au Pair on vacation it is important to distinguish when she is working and when she is also using vacation time.
Car Insurance
Many Host Families rely on their Au Pair to drive the children to and from school and activities. Au Pairs that will be driving while in the U.S. will need to obtain an international driver's license before arriving.

Host Families that will require their Au Pair to drive will be responsible for adding the Au Pair as an additional driver on their car insurance policy.  The maximum deductible allowed for the Au Pair is $500.

Education
Au Pairs are required to complete education while they are in the U.S. Au Pairs may take any classAu Pairs have an education requirement while they are in the U.S. they would like as long as it as at an accredited post-secondary institution. Online classes and distance learning courses are not accepted for the requirement.

Host Families are responsible for the first $500* of their Au Pair's tuition.  That means if the classes cost more than $500, the Au Pair is responsible for the balance.
