German Au Pairs
|
The Au Pair program is very well known in Germany. During
school breaks, many German Au Pairs participate in
voluntary
internships at local kindergartens in order to obtain more
childcare experience.
Since German is not spoken in many countries there is a
large focus on language education. All German children study
English in school and it is also common to learn additional
languages. In fact, 58% of the German Au Pairs placed in the
U.S. speak 3 or more languages.
Germans may not receive a driver’s license until they are 18
years old. In addition to passing written and driving tests,
all citizens must also complete a course in first aid. All
of the Au Pairs from Germany currently placed in the U.S.
had their driver’s license prior to their arrival.

What
do Host Parents say about their Au Pairs from Germany?
|
Julie has been a Host Mom with goAUPAIR for many years.
Svenja, Julie's current Au Pair, is her family's fourth
German Au Pair.
How well did your Au Pair assimilate into your home?
"Svenja and our previous German Au Pairs have assimilated
easily into our home. Our experience has been that the
quality of German Au Pair’s spoken English has been good to
near fluent making communication easier. Each have had
strong driving skills."
What cultural differences did you encounter?
"Being an Alaskan family, our experience may be unique, but
taking Alaska out of it, the biggest cultural difference we
have encountered with Svenja and our other German Au Pairs
is food differences. These are easily overcome. There was a
big difference between our one German Au Pair from the old
East than the 3 from West Germany, but she was with us more
than 10 years ago, [that] is probably a generational issue
that is not relevant any longer."
Would you ever choose another Au Pair from Germany?
"IN A HEART BEAT!"
