Matching the Right Au Pair with your Kids
How can you tell if your Au Pair is going to fit well with your children? I’m not sure what makes the magic, but it’s fascinating how some of my sitters will bond well with my toddler and not my baby, or vice versa. The same is true for Au Pairs. Some Au Pairs are better with babies and other will connect with toddlers, children or teens. Some Au Pairs will also fit well with one child, while others fit well with twins or larger families.
The beauty of having an Au Pair is you can select them based on your family situation and your children’s ages and circumstances. Host Families will pick an Au Pair based on their infant qualifications one year, and then pick another Au Pair based on their driving abilities a few years later. The Au Pair program grows with the family. Ultimately, nothing is better than having someone else around who also loves your kids too.
The best way to find out how your Au Pair matches with the children is to get them on the phone with the kids during the matching period. If the Au Pair has a video on their application watch to see how they interact with the kids in the clips they’ve posted. Many families will note how often the Au Pair asks about the children during matching communication and what things they seem interested in knowing about the kids. They also look for Au Pairs who ask age appropriate questions, or who seem genuinely interested in the Host Children. In good matches, many tears are shed as Au Pairs returning home relinquish their childcare duties. Au Pairs become life-long friends to the children they tend.
