Frequently Asked Questions by Host Families

FAQ

Can I request a specific nationality?
Certainly. However, the more flexible you are in your requirements the more au pairs you will be able to select from. It is best to indicate your preferences, but allow your placement coordinator to refer the best candidates for your position.

We often travel internationally; will our au pair be able to travel with us?
As long as we are notified before she leaves the country, your au pair is free to travel with you during her 12-month stay.

Can our au pair stay with us for more than one year?
Yes. The Department of State recently launched a Pilot Extension Program which allows the au pairs to stay an additional 6, 9 or 12 months after their first year. Certain terms apply and you should contact goAUPAIR headquarters to learn more.

Can I ask my au pair to work more than 45 hours per week?
Au pairs cannot work more than 45 hours per week. This restriction is designed to provide the au pairs with enough free time to learn about American culture through classes, activities and outings.

Are there limits as to what the au pair's responsibilities can include?
Yes. The au pair's primary focus should be on childcare. While she can also provide you with light housekeeping, she should not be expected to clean the entire house. She should not be expected to prepare family meals on a regular basis, nor care for the children during extensive absences of both parents.

I have a child with special needs; can I apply to become a Host Family?
Most definitely. Be sure to describe in detail your child's specific needs, as well as any qualifications or prior experience you require of your au pair. Keep in mind that it may take longer to process your application.

Are we required to have any kind of international background to host an au pair?
No, but it is important to have an open mind about cultural differences that will undoubtedly exist between you and your au pair. With flexibility, you will find that the opportunity to host an au pair is a wonderful learning experience for your children, your au pair and yourself.
