Designations

U.S. Department of State

The U.S. Department of States oversees and regulates the Au Pair program and all participating sponsors by issuing rules, regulations and procedures. As a sponsor designated by the U.S. Department of State, Go Au Pair is authorized to administer and monitor the Au Pair program and participants.

The Department of State oversees the Au pair Program whereby foreign nationals are afforded the opportunity to live with an American Host Family and participate directly in the home life of the Host Family. All au pair participants provide child care services to the Host Family and attend a U.S. post-secondary educational institution. Au pair participants provide up to forty-five hours of child care services per week and pursue no less than six semester hours of academic credit or its equivalent during their year of program participation. Some au pairs participate in the EduCare program. These au pairs provide up to thirty hours of child care services per week and pursue no less than twelve semester hours of academic credit or its equivalent during their year of program participation.

Affiliations

International Au Pair Association

IAPA was founded by leading Au Pair organizations in 1994 at WYSTC (World Youth and Student Travel Conference) in Vancouver, Canada. IAPA's main aim is to protect the rights of all au pairs and Host Families and at the same time establish internationally approved guidelines for Au pair exchange programs.

New agencies arise as the demand for Au Pairs continues to increase. With growth in the industry comes the need for regulation at the international level. IAPA aims to meet this need by developing a system of self-regulation and by introducing professional standards. IAPA’s objective is to set realistic standards that can be readily implemented.

Alliance for International Education and Cultural Exchange

The Alliance for International Educational and Cultural Exchange is an association of 76 non-governmental organizations comprising the international educational and cultural exchange community in the United States. Founded in 1993 after a merger of the International Exchange Association and the Liaison Group for International Educational Exchange, the Alliance serves as the only collective public policy voice of the exchange community.

Alliance's mission is to formulate and promote public policies that support the growth and well-being of international exchange links between the people of the United States and other nations.
