Daniel is an Au Pair from South Africa who was recognized as one of
the 6 international finalists for
the Au Pair of the Year
Award in 2009. Daniel was nominated by his Host Family who said that
he "exemplifies the qualities of an excellent Au Pair!" Daniel
arrived in the U.S. in March of 2008 and began providing care for
two boys, aged 12 and 2. In December 2008, the youngest child was
diagnosed with a developmental delay in speech and Daniel began
working with him each day to help develop and improve his skills. In
addition to his duties as an Au Pair, Daniel volunteers at a local
community group for at risk youth. "There will never be enough words
to describe my time and experience here in the United States! I have
to constantly remind myself that this is not a dream, but that I’m
actually part of an American family and living in America."

Mariela
is the 2005 winner of the Au Pair of the Year award. While in the U.S.
Mariela worked with a single mother to provide care for her 10 month old
daughter, Serena. During Mariela's time with her Host Family, Serena was
diagnosed as profoundly deaf. "Rather than being daunted by the
experience, she became excited about this new opportunity to learn
another language and culture," wrote her host mom. Mariela's dedication
to Serena was apparent when one of the first signs that Serena learned
was Mariela's name. "My experiences as an Au Pair have helped me
discover new abilities and allowed me to improve myself as an Au Pair,
person, woman, daughter and sister." |

Lenuta, the 2004 Au Pair of the Year award winner,
matched with a Host Family in Virginia. While there she cared for two boys,
Andrew and Lucas. Lenuta worked with her host parents as a team to help
provide the best possible care for the children. "She doesn’t just love
children because they are cute, but she sees them as the world’s future
and treats them that way, helping them to become responsible and
thoughtful individuals." Lenuta was able to identify areas of need
within the home and willingly pitched in to help. "I can tell with my
hand on my heart that it was a fulfilling experience and it's still an
understatement! I'm very grateful for what I've accomplished and what
I've become. I consider myself blessed."
