The first few days of an Au Pair arrival can be very exciting, your family is eager to get to know your new Au Pair and Au Pairs feel the same way. The first days are also a time of adjustments for both you and your Au Pair.
For this reason, the
Department of State regulation states that a Host Family must agree that “a parent or other responsible adult will remain in the home for the first three days following the Au Pair's arrival.”
After your
Au Pair has arrived, she/he needs time to get used to the new surroundings. She is also getting used to a different weather, a time change, a new home. Take the first three days to familiarize her with the household, talk about the family’s schedule and especially how the children should be cared for in their home.
It is also a good idea to take these first days to make arrangements with your Au Pair. Will she need a cell phone? When and how will her stipend be paid? Should you expect your Au Pair to drive, make sure you give her a chance to get used to the car while you are around.
“As with any person, entering a new country and a new family can be challenging. In addition to feeling tired from their travels and needing to rest, it’s important for families to remember that these girls aren’t familiar with our culture and they need guidance. The first 3 days are also a good time to be able to show the Au Pair around the home as well as the neighborhood, and to go over what their basic duties will be.” Keri Lehman, Go Au Pair’s Placement Coordinator
