The US is one of the world’s top owners of motor vehicles. It is almost a one to one ratio. Many other countries are closer to one in ten ratio of people who own a car. Many of our communities are built around our ability to drive, instead of walking or riding a bus to get around, except for in the case of the largest cities in the US.

Changing Host Family needs: A driving Au Pair
Some days I’ll make it to dinner time without setting foot outside my front door. Moving around town with a baby and a toddler is tedious. Preparations to leave include feeding them, making snacks, changing diapers and putting shoes on. Leaving the house can easily take a half an hour. Once you’re out, there are also limited options of where they can go. The grocery store, for example, is out of the question for my energetic toddler. In the case of driving, the grass is greener on the other side. I’ve watched as my sister-in-laws have gone from taking the car for a spin infrequently to full time taxi drivers after their kids entered school.

Great times at April Au Pair training in NYC
After months of preparation and dreaming, it’s finally here - the touch down on North American soil. Our Au Pair Sis, Janine, does her best to meet up with any of our Au Pairs who might be attending the York City training workshops after their arrival. She says, energy is high and great memories are created. In just a few days these Au Pair create lifelong bonds and then are off to their new Host Families for the first time in person. Every Host Family is going to have certain cultural preferences, personality preferences, age preferences, and so on. But one thing I assume is the same for almost everyone finding that right fit can be stressful.

Cultural Exchanges Inspire
With 7 billion personalities on this planet– its no wonder we are so different. My friend moved from Utah to China last year and was back visiting for a month. While she shared a bundle of interesting Chinese cultural tidbits, I couldn’t help but ask her what it is like to raise her boy there (he is the same age as mine, two-years-old).
