General Attitudes

Panamanians are used to visitors from around the world creating an atmosphere of tolerance and harmony among the people. Panama and the United States have had a long relationship, better known for the construction of the world famous Panama Canal which opened in 1913. Panama is very Americanized, with many American television programs and the cultural traces lefts by the thousands of American families who worked in the Panama Canal and the U.S. military and lived in Panama over the 97 years that the United States owned the Canal.

Diet

Panama has a tropical climate and more than 1,500 miles of ocean front coast line with crystal clear waters and an abundance of fish. In fact, the word Panama is an indigenous word meaning “plentiful fish”. The country has a large variety of tropical fruits, vegetables and herbs that are used in cooking. It has also influence from Hispanic, Native Indian, European, African and even Chinese cousine.

Family Life

Most Au Pairs from Panama gained their child care experience while taking care of their little brothers, sisters and cousins. Panamanian Au Pairs come from a close-knit family where traditionally, the youth live at home with their parents, brothers and sisters until they are married. Au Pairs from Panama have an inborn warmth and love for children because of the old world customs and close families.

"The average Au Pair candidate we recruit is in our program working with us and our staff for 5 to 8 months before she travels to the United States. During those months we are getting to know her, confirming her childcare experience, checking her other references, helping her fill out her forms and application, verifying her driver’s license, testing her English, etc.” Monica Davis, International Representative - Panama

In honor of our featured country, families who match with an Au Pair from Panama in June will receive $100 off the program fees
