General Attitudes

Thailand means “Land of the Free” and the Thai people a proud their country has almost completely avoided foreign rule. Thai are known as warm and friendly people who are loyal, especially to family. Education is highly valued and occupation is very important.

“Nothing was ever too much trouble for our Au Pair. Whether it was a last minute change in schedule or a request for Thai cooking lessons from one of the neighbors, she was always willing to be flexible, was very accommodating and always maintained an extremely positive attitude.” – Host Mom, TX

Family Life

The family is very important to Thai culture and it is not uncommon to find several generations living under the same roof. Children are taught to respect and obey their elders, which is witnessed throughout their entire lives. As college students, many Thai young adults live away from home, but most children live with their parents until they have married.

Diet

Balance is the foundation of Thai cuisine. The combination of sweet, spicy, salty and sour is typically found in one dish. Thai families typically eat dinner, the largest meal of the day, together. Multiple courses are not served and all of the food prepared for a meal is eaten at once.

“Aiw has been a fabulous guide introducing us to the Thai culture as well, especially the food. It has been wonderful to learn of her customs and traditions and share ours with her likewise. We will miss the mango sticky rice and tom ka ga soup.” – Host Mom, CO
