General Attitudes

Despite being the smallest country geographically in Central America, El Salvador has the third largest economy in the region. Almost all residents speak Spanish, which was brought in by the Spanish settlers. Before the Spanish conquest, the area was inhabited by the Pipil Indians. Very few Salvadorians now speak the indigenous language.

Our International Representative in El Salvador, Anabella de Alegria explains that all Salvadorian Au Pair candidates have personal meetings with her at every stage of the application process. She gets to know them, check their English skills and driving experience. She also says that English is a mandatory subject in schools in El Salvador and to obtain a drivers license, candidates must take driving lessons at a private driving school.

“We have a close bond with the United States, there are many candidates that have been to the U.S.A. as tourists or have friends and relatives there, so we understand the American culture and candidates have no difficulties adapting to the daily life in America.”

Diet

Salvadorians are very fortunate to be able to enjoy different styles of food. Although fast food and international cuisine are found in country, El Salvadorians have a very healthy diet, where snacks include fresh tropical fruits like mangos, papayas, watermelons. Corn is also a very common ingredient and is most often made into thick tortillas that are eaten at every meal.

Family Life

Respect is due to older persons from younger person and it includes using titles of respect before people's names and using the formal version of you in the Spanish language. It is polite to always greet people when entering a store and, in small towns, it is very common to greet people passing on the street. Many of the cultural traditions in El Salvador are also based heavily on the country’s Spanish and Roman Catholic heritage.

“Salvadorian candidates are very family oriented people, most of the Au Pair candidates have large families, some have three to five siblings or more! So they are used to taking care of the younger ones starting at home. Most of the candidates are college students, they are very independent, open minded and willing to help." - Anabella de Alegria, Go Au Pair’s International Representative in El Salvador
